As you already know, breathing in dust, vapours and fumes at work can cause life-changing lung disease or make existing conditions worse. The HSE is shining a spotlight on work-related lung disease in their 2019 campaign.
400,000 working days are lost every year to lung-related ill health caused by regularly breathing in dust or harmful agents with 12,000 deaths annually attributed to work-related lung issues. As such, the HSE is cracking down on poor practices, initially by visiting construction sites across Great Britain to see if businesses have measures in place to protect their workers’ lungs from the likes of asbestos, silica and wood dust.
The HSE will specifically be visiting London construction sites with a view to reviewing asbestos management, looking for evidence of the construction workers knowing the risk, planning their work and using the right controls.
Ensuring your site is ready for the inspection must be TOP PRIORITY.
The HSE #DustBuster campaign is using the hashtags #DustBuster and #WorkRight to highlight the risks and promote the positive messages around making the right health choices on site, including ‘I #WorkRight so I don’t die young #DustBuster’
The Health and Safety Executive is Britain’s national regulator for workplace health and safety, looking to prevent work-related death, injury and ill health through regulatory actions that range from influencing behaviours across industry sectors through to targeted interventions.
The HSE London Construction Inspection Initiative will target London sites, primarily focused on health and on asbestos work in particular. The most common construction tasks being focused on include:
- Cutting paving blocks, kerbs and flags
- Chasing concrete and raking mortar
- Cutting roof tiles
- Scabbling or grinding
- Soft strip demolition
- Dry sweeping
- Cutting and sanding wood
- Sanding taped and covered plasterboard joints
Asbestos is considered the ‘slow killer’and associated with poor working practices. The HSE estimates around 8,000 people die annually from work-related cancers. The construction industry accounts for around 3,500 of these with asbestos and silica being the major causes.
The HSE inspections are being carried out to ensure that the businesses, leaders and workers within the construction industry are all:
- Aware of the risks
- Properly planning and carrying out their work-related tasks
- Using the correct controls
Where the HSE finds poor practices during the inspection period, enforcement action will be taken.
It is everyone’s responsibility to work right so that your workforce goes home healthy.
