Ensafe celebrates a year of success despite challenges

Well, these past 12 months have been a rollercoaster, to say the least, not only have we had Covid-19, lockdowns, and a tier system to deal with, but before all of that, we acquired an environmental consultancy based in 7 offices from Scotland to Devon.

So we set our sights on making 1 large company covering the length and breaths of the UK and ROI. Before we could merge our 2 UKAS accredited companies, 2 of the offices/ labs needed to move to different premises. So we had lots of packing, moving and paperwork to do for both of the UKAS extension to scopes, before even thinking of settling into a new home and becoming one company (we like to call it our Ensafe family). Then 2020 arrived and we set our sights on training, upskilling, auditing, and authorising all the additional 86 employees into our UKAS accreditation procedures for asbestos surveying and testing across all of our offices. That alone is no mean feat, but then we had a merger visit by UKAS to show what we had achieved so far and our plan going forward, in March. This was a really positive assessment by both companies' previous Lead Assessors, which meant we could carry on with our agreed merger plan.

We then had remote assessments in our asbestos offices starting in mid-August with assessments for Bishops Stortford, Braintree, and Manchester. September brought assessment for Plymouth and Scotland, followed by Daventry in October and Ripponden in November. Then, our final assessment on-site to assess a 4 Stage Clearance in December.

Not only did we want to merge our UKAS accredited asbestos divisions of the business, we also wanted to merge and add to our ISO 14001/45001 accreditation for all divisions. So we remodeled, updated, and improved our management system by creating a Group Integrated Management System which includes, procedure, documents, and flowcharts for all our deliverable service ( H&S, Legionella, Asbestos, Geo-Environmental, Acoustics, Lighting, Odour, Air Quality and Ecology) as well as HR, Quality, Environmental, Construction, Rail, Covid-19, and Training. To say that was a small or easy job is a massive understatement in itself, but we did it and in June we started our assessment to gain 9001/14001/45001 in all of our UK based office ( now condensed into 5 offices). 5 auditors later and we achieved this on 14th July. We also had another scheduled audit this December for these standards too, which we sailed through.

So looking back at the last 12 months and having worked on 19 external audits we are looking to the future and hoping for a quieter 2021. But we are looking to expand our ISO accredited and finally get INAB accredited for our ROI office, so maybe not as quiet as we hoped.

At Ensafe our saying is ‘Compliance without Complication’ and our Quality and Compliance department have definitely made this year count when it comes to being Compliant and with glowing reports from the external auditors, there has been no complication.

No business can strive to be the best version of itself without having departments in the background to help make the business run smoothly. At Ensafe our departments who do the site work are just a small percentage of what our business is made up of and we certainly couldn’t do it without them. We offer a quality service, so we take the time to put the work where it matters first.

Roll on 2021 and all you can throw at us, but for now, we’re going to enjoy our Christmas break!
