Ecology

Ensafe provides trusted and timely ecological advice and assessment services throughout the UK, offering bespoke solutions for clients in a variety of industries.

There are many legally protected species within the UK, including bats, badgers, newts, water voles and otters, and their habitats and breeding seasons could lead to ecological constraints for your project. The ecology and environmental consultants at Ensafe can provide comprehensive services including Habitat Regulation Assessments, Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, and strategic advice to ensure you are compliant with all regulations.

Our ecologists are certified by the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management so you can trust them to recommend the best solutions and support at every step of your project. Whether you are looking for mitigation advise or are wanting to improve your company’s sustainability and biodiversity in line with local and national targets, Ensafe is sure to keep you compliant without complication.

Our ecology services include:

Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA) – Our PEAs consist of a desk study and onsite survey to assess the ecology and habitats that may be present, and how your plans may need to accommodate this.

Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA) – Our consultants are trained to assess the potential ecological impact your project may have on the surrounding environment and subsequently advise on the best ways to reduce any negative effects.

Great Crested Newt Surveys – Great crested newts are a protected species within the UK and their presence at a site with or near a pond must be assessed before planning permission can be granted. These surveys are only carried out from mid-March to mid-June, so long-term planning is essential to avoid delays.

Bat Surveys – Bats and their habitats are legally protected in the UK and their presence at a site must be assessed before planning permission can be granted. While internal and external scoping surveys can be carried out all year round, emergence and activity surveys can only be undertaken between May and September, so long-term planning is essential to avoid delays.

Reptile Surveys – Reptiles including grass snakes, slow worms, adders, and common lizards are legally protected in the UK and their presence at a site both in rural and urban areas must be assessed before planning permission can be granted.

Other Protected Species Surveys – Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act and Habitats Regulations, the presence of certain species of plants and animals within a site could impact your planning permission. At Ensafe, we carry out reliable surveys for a number of protected species including:

  • Barn owl surveys
  • Otter surveys
  • Water vole surveys
  • Dormouse surveys
  • Reptile surveys
  • Breeding and wintering bird surveys
  • Badger surveys
  • Botanical surveys
  • Invertebrate surveys

Ecological Clerk of Works (EcoW) – Ensafe can provide our clients with an ecological clerk of works to supervise construction on a site, ensuring work is carried out in compliance with regulations, best practice, and planning permission. We can also answer emergency call outs when necessary.

Ecological Management and Enhancement Plans – Our ecological management and enhancement plans can make your planning application more favourable, proving that you will not only safeguard the ecology of your site through management and mitigation but will also work to enhance it as parts of your development.

BREEAM and Code for Sustainable Homes – Our ecologists can advise on ways to maximise the number of credits your site can achieve in order to reach your desired BREEAM rating for sustainable home developments.

Habitat Regulation Assessments – We offer initial site screenings and subsequent full habitat regulation assessments, using the wide-ranging expertise of our in-house consultants to provide a comprehensive assessment of the impact a project may have on Natura 2000 sites.

Advice for Local Planning Authorities – Our knowledge of regional and national legislations within the UK enables us to assist planning authorities in determining the suitability of planning applications for their intended purposes, based on the ecological information provided.
